Weather in Cha-am — Your Complete Climate Guide
Cha-am's weather is one of the main reasons people choose to live here. With warm temperatures year-round, abundant sunshine, and comfortable sea breezes, the climate supports an outdoor lifestyle that's hard to match anywhere in Europe or North America.
The Three Seasons
Thailand's climate divides into three distinct seasons, each offering its own character:
Cool Season (November – February)
The most pleasant time of year, with daytime temperatures of 26-31°C and cooler evenings around 22-25°C. Humidity drops, skies are clear, and rainfall is minimal. This is peak tourist season and the most comfortable period for outdoor activities, golf, and beach life. Many expats from Scandinavia and Northern Europe time their extended stays around these months.
Hot Season (March – May)
Temperatures climb to 33-38°C with high humidity. April is typically the hottest month. The sea remains warm and inviting, and air conditioning becomes essential for indoor comfort. Swimming, early morning activities, and evening outings are the norm. The Songkran water festival in mid-April provides welcome relief from the heat.
Rainy Season (June – October)
Despite the name, the rainy season doesn't mean constant rain. Typical patterns involve clear mornings followed by afternoon thunderstorms that last 1-2 hours, after which skies often clear again. Total rainfall is significantly less than destinations on Thailand's Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi). Temperatures are slightly cooler than the hot season, making the rainy months quite comfortable.
Cha-am vs Other Thai Destinations
Cha-am's location on the Gulf of Thailand gives it a drier climate than Andaman coast destinations. Annual rainfall is approximately 900-1,100mm compared to 2,000-2,500mm in Phuket. The town also avoids the severe weather that occasionally affects the Gulf islands further south.
Impact on Property
When buying property in Cha-am, weather considerations are important. Good ventilation and air conditioning are essential. Properties with covered outdoor living spaces allow enjoyment of the outdoors year-round. East-facing units in condos capture morning sun while avoiding the intense afternoon heat. Sea breezes can reduce air conditioning costs for beachfront properties.
What to Wear
Light, breathable cotton clothing is standard year-round. A light rain jacket is useful during the rainy season. Sunscreen and hats are essential — the tropical sun is significantly stronger than in Northern Europe. Most expats adopt the Thai casual style quickly: shorts, t-shirts, and sandals for daily wear.
