About Cha-Am - A Quiet Royal-Coast Beach Town

Cha-Am is a quiet Thai beach town on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, in the northern part of Phetchaburi Province. It sits about two hours south of Bangkok by car and roughly twenty-five minutes north of Hua Hin. The centre of the town runs along a single seven-kilometre stretch of casuarina-lined beach, and the pace of life follows that beach rather than any resort strip.

Where it is and how it feels

The Thai royal family has kept a summer presence here since Rama VI built the Mrigadayavan Palace at the southern end of town in 1923, and that quiet royal-coast character still shapes the place: low-rise buildings, no nightlife strip, a slow street grid inland from Ruamchit Road, and long tree-shaded avenues rather than neon. In administrative terms Cha-Am is the district capital of Amphoe Cha-Am within Phetchaburi (เพชรบุรี), a province better known for palm sugar, temple architecture and river estuaries than for mass tourism.

The beach

The seven-kilometre beach is the defining feature. Casuarina (son thale, สนทะเล) trees line most of it, giving continuous shade along the promenade. The sand is soft and light brown, the seabed slopes very gently, and the water is calm from November through May. Families with children, older Thai visitors, and residents doing morning walks are the typical users. Deckchairs and small food stalls occupy the beachfront near the pier and thin out as you move north or south.

Weekday calm, weekend energy

Cha-Am has two rhythms. Monday to Thursday the town is genuinely quiet: schoolchildren in uniform on the streets, mopeds outnumber cars, the beach is mostly empty by four in the afternoon. From Friday evening the picture changes. Bangkok families drive down for the weekend, park along Ruamchit Road, and eat seafood at the beach restaurants. Sunday evening the town empties again. Understanding this weekly cycle is the single most useful thing for anyone who lives here or is considering it.

Who Cha-Am suits

Cha-Am suits people who want a working Thai coastal town rather than a resort. That includes retired Scandinavian, German and British residents; Bangkok-based Thai families with a weekend house; and a small but stable community of remote workers. It is not the right choice for anyone who wants nightlife, English-language everything, or a large expatriate scene of the Pattaya kind. Getting there

By car from Bangkok, take Rama II Road (Highway 35) to Phetkasem Highway (Route 4) and continue south; the drive is about 180 km and two hours in normal traffic. Long-distance buses from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) reach Cha-Am in around two and a half hours. The State Railway of Thailand southern line has a stop at Cha-Am station on the inland side of town; trains are slower but scenic. The nearest airport is Hua Hin Airport (HHQ), thirty minutes south, with limited scheduled service; Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok is the practical international gateway.

Climate in one line

Tropical: hot and dry March-May, wet and warm June-October (short afternoon showers rather than day-long rain), cool and dry November-February. The cool season is the season everyone wants.
