About Hua Hin - Thailand's Original Royal Beach Town

Hua Hin is Thailand's original royal beach town, on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. It sits about 200 kilometres south of Bangkok, roughly three hours by car in normal traffic, and just twenty-five minutes south of quieter Cha-Am. Where Cha-Am is a working Thai coastal town, Hua Hin is a proper mid-sized city built around a beach: more international, more built-up, and noticeably more expensive.

Where it is and what it is

The town became a royal retreat in the 1920s when King Rama VII built Klai Kangwon Palace (พระราชวังไกลกังวล, "far from worries") at the northern end of the beach. That palace is still in use today, and the royal presence set the tone for a century of civilised low-rise development along the shore. Hua Hin is the seat of Amphoe Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan (ประจวบคีรีขันธ์), the long, narrow province that forms the neck of the Thai peninsula.

The beach and the shoreline

The main beach stretches roughly eight kilometres from the fishing pier and Chopsticks Hill in the north down to the temple-topped headland of Khao Takiab (เขาตะเกียบ, "chopstick mountain") in the south. It is broader and slightly softer than Cha-Am's beach, with fewer casuarina trees but more open sky. How Hua Hin actually feels

Hua Hin has three overlapping layers. The old town runs one block back from the pier: shophouses, tailors, the historic Hua Hin Railway Station (a wooden landmark from 1926), and a dense grid of restaurants. The beachfront hotels form a second layer of higher-end resorts and condominium towers. Inland, past the railway, a modern city has grown up around Petchkasem Road with hospitals, international schools, shopping centres and Thailand's densest cluster of championship golf courses. Hua Hin vs Cha-Am - the practical picture

Most residents of one town use the other regularly. Hua Hin has the international hospitals (Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, San Paulo, Hua Hin Hospital), the larger supermarkets (Villa Market, Makro, several Tesco Lotus outlets), and the branded shopping (BluPort, Market Village). Cha-Am has the quieter beach, the lower prices and the less-crowded weekdays. Twenty-five minutes on Route 4 separates them, which means many Cha-Am residents do their weekly errands in Hua Hin and sleep in Cha-Am.

Who Hua Hin suits

Hua Hin suits people who want the amenities of a full city with a beach attached: a large and long-established expatriate community (Scandinavian, German, British, Swiss and increasingly Chinese), access to international-standard healthcare, English-language service across most sectors, and a serious golf and dining scene. It is not the right choice for anyone chasing a quiet fishing village - that is Cha-Am's role in this pair.

Getting there

By car from Bangkok, take Rama II Road (Highway 35) to Phetkasem (Route 4) and continue south past Cha-Am; roughly 200 km and two and a half to three hours. Long-distance buses from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal reach Hua Hin in about three and a half hours. Trains on the southern line stop at the historic Hua Hin Railway Station. Hua Hin Airport (HHQ) has limited scheduled service; most international arrivals come through Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok.

Climate in one line

Tropical and virtually identical to Cha-Am: hot and dry March-May, wet and warm June-October with short afternoon showers, cool and dry November-February. The cool season is the peak season for both towns.
